The Celebration of Bisto Shish Nowroz Maah

The tradition of 26 Nowroz Maah is a celebration which is held in most villages of Mazandaran, but it is held in special manner in Imamzade Hassan village in Savadkuh city; that is called the feast of the dead. Nowroz is the ending month of the ancient Tabari calendar of Mazandaran; it doesn't mean the month of New Year, but the New Year comes after it. Locals of Savadkuh and Band Pey in Mazandaran call the 26th day of this month Ayde Maahe Bisto Shish or Ayde Maah.

People of Mazandaran believe it was the day in which Fereydon could over trough the King Zahhak or the day Fereydon departed to launch war against the King Zahhak. They celebrate this day because they believe that people were released and refreshed after Fereydon captured the king Zahhak and chained him on Damavand Mountain; so they celebrated this occasion annually.

Nowadays, villagers in Mazandaran, especially in Savadkuh, go to cemeteries, lit candles and pay tribute to their dead ones. They also donate foods to the persons present there as a mercy for their dead ones.

People prepare themselves before holding this ceremony. They take bath, bake bread and meals, take fruits, sweets and other foods and go to cemeteries. They stay there for hours and read Quran and pray to God to bless their dead ones. This is while people call the celebration of 26 Nowroz Maah "the feast of the dead". After the paying tribute to the dead ones, they get together, make fire, do local entertainments like louchu wrestling, and go to local market held on the site on that day. Many couples have wedding ceremony on that day provided it is not coincident with Muharram, Ramadan, mourning or ominous days.
